I once read the advice, "If you want to take better photographs, go to more interesting places." I've been fortunate that my career has taken me to places few people will ever have the opportunity to visit.
For more than two decades, I flew helicopters throughout some of Canada's most remote regions, operating along the rugged Labrador coast and into the Torngat Mountains. My work took me to isolated radar stations, mountaintops, and Arctic landscapes that are inaccessible to almost everyone except those who work there.
Working as a pilot presents its own photographic challenges. While the landscape constantly unfolds below, flying the aircraft must always come first.
For that reason, virtually all of my helicopter photographs are made on the ground, and any images taken in flight are captured only when I am the non-flying pilot and conditions allow it safely.
Many remarkable moments pass unseen through the camera simply because my first responsibility has always been to fly. The photographs in this collection represent those occasions when preparation, opportunity, and circumstance came together to document a world that few people have the chance to experience.
